Proper Washing Techniques for Human Hair Wigs: A Comprehensive Guide

If you’re a proud owner of a human hair wig, maintaining its quality is essential to ensure it looks great and lasts longer. Regular washing is a critical part of wig care, and knowing the right techniques can make all the difference. In this blog, we will share effective washing methods, including co-washing, as well as important DO-NOTS to keep in mind when caring for your wig.

Why Proper Washing is Important

Wearing a human hair wig requires diligent care to maintain its natural look and feel. Washing your wig not only helps remove dirt and product buildup but also revitalizes its luster. Proper techniques protect the hair fibers from damage, ensuring your investment remains healthy and beautiful.

Washing Techniques for Human Hair Wigs

  1. Regular Washing Schedule: Ideally, wash your wig every 7-10 wears, or more frequently if it has been exposed to sweat, smoke, or heavy styling products.
  2. Co-Washing: Co-washing, or conditioner washing, is a gentle approach to cleanse your wig without stripping natural oils. To co-wash:
    • Rinse the wig under lukewarm water to remove surface buildup.
    • Apply a generous amount of silicone-free conditioner, working it through the strands with your fingers.
    • Allow the conditioner to sit for 5-10 minutes for deep penetration.
    • Rinse thoroughly with cool water to help close the cuticles, enhancing shine.
  3. Use the Right Products: Opt for sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for human hair wigs. These products help retain moisture and prevent dryness.
  4. Gentle Handling: Always handle your wig gently. When washing, use a soft touch and avoid harsh rubbing, which can damage the hair fibers.

Do-NOTS When Washing Your Human Hair Wig

  • Do NOT Use Hot Water: Hot water can cause the hair to become brittle and lead to dryness. Always use lukewarm or cool water.
  • Avoid Regular Hair Products: Steer clear of products not designed for wigs, as they may contain harsh chemicals that can damage the hair.
  • Do NOT Twist or Wring: When rinsing or drying your wig, avoid twisting or wringing the hair. This can lead to tangling and breakage. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water.
  • Do NOT Expose to Heat: Never wash your wig with hot tools like blow dryers or curling irons immediately after washing. Always air dry your wig to maintain its integrity.
  • Avoid Hairbrushes When Wet: When wet, human hair wigs are more susceptible to breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle gently.

Tips & Tricks From Wig Daddy Himself

  • Only wash your wig when necessary and depending on how often you wear.
  • Co-wash is always best for normal washing and maintenance.
  • Use a deep conditioner after (even when co-washing) for extra moisture and nutrients.
  • Only use shampoo (a small amount) if it’s absolutely necessary.
  • Gently detangle and brush through the hair before wetting.
  • Only use lukewarm/cold water to keep the cuticle smooth and to lock in moisture.
  • Never scrub or rub the lace as the knots can loosen and cause tangling and shedding.
  • Rinse thoroughly in a downward direction (same direction as the hair). This keeps the hair from tangling and the knots tight and secure to the lace.
  • After washing, squeeze the hair in your palm to get rid of excess water.
  • Use a silk pillowcase or soft 100% cotton or bamboo towel to remove excess moisture from the hair.
  • Never blow dry.
  • Use a very wide-tooth comb to gently detangle, only if needed. If not, detangle after air drying.
  • Air dry outside for quicker results (Do not place your wig in direct sun as UV rays can fade hair color).
  • Never use hot tools on wet hair.
  • Apply a heat protectant cream or spray after excess moisture is toweled off and before air drying.
  • Never brush the wig when wet. Use of a wide-tooth comb is fine.
  • Hot tools are fine as long as the temp is 350 degrees or below (300 is my personal setting for all hot tools).
  • Use products without sulfates, detergents, or silicone. That includes shampoos and conditioners.
  • Never wear your wig to bed.
  • Always store your wig in a designated silk bag or wig bag. A wig block is preferred as it will protect the integrity of the wig and ensure its shape and fit throughout the life of the unit.
